  about the artist

Carol Matranga Courtney works out of a studio in the small, coastal town of Pacific Grove California. Her idea of a perfect day always includes time in the studio, listening to classic jazz and "playing in clay." During her best creative moments, time seems to stand still, and she immerses herself in shapes, shadows and light.

Carol's work is a grateful celebration of life. Her still-life sculptures of birds in nature evoke the beauty of the marshes and beaches of the central coast. Her figurative pieces develop as she works, ultimately telling their own stories to the viewer. She describes the feeling of epiphany when a figurative piece she's working on startles her as it seems to come alive and assert its own identity. Carol works in clay and wax, and her finished work is cast in bronze, plaster, or kiln-fired clay.
